Dr. Victor B. Cline of the University of Utah is a psychologist with a robust private practice. His specialty is marital counseling and sexual addiction. Cline is the author of “Pornography Effects on Adults and Children.” Cline is a recognized authority on sexual addictions including online pornography and masturbation.
He has seen, heard and felt the pain these destructive addictions have on families, careers, addicts and their loved ones. Cline is especially critical of pornography. The Doctor asserts that pornography unfailingly unleashes a “four factor syndrome” that is a path to self-destruction.
Cline further asserts that the untreated male or female porn addict will follow the four-factor syndrome without fail. To understand and treat the sex addict, one must understand where in the chain the addict is positioned. Cline’s four steps are:
- Addiction – The pornographer gets hooked. One exploring pornographic materials, certain persons cannot stop. The material seems to provide an aphrodisiac or sexual stimulant. The most common form of release is masturbation. The greater the addict’s capacity to fantasize, the stronger the addiction.
- Escalation – As the habit continues, the addict pursues more deviant sexual conduct, which is necessary to produce sexual turn-ons. A willing sexual partner is never enough. In fact, Cline says the addict’s capacity to have meaningful sexual intercourse diminishes which increase the addict’s need for masturbation.
- Desensitization – The addict’s need to find more outlandish material increases. What might originally have seemed pornographic becomes commonplace in the porn addict’s mind. Even repulsive pornography becomes sexually arousing and overrides many of the addict’s life-long beliefs.
- Acting Out Sexually – At this point, the porn addict begins to act out the pornographic fantasies. Actions might include compulsive promiscuity, exhibitionism, group sex and voyeurism. More serious actions might include sexual abuse of children, rape and the infliction of pain during sex.
Cline’s conclusion is, “In my clinical experience, however, the major consequence of being addicted to pornography is not the probability or possibility of committing a serious sex crime (thought this can and does occur), but rather the disturbance of the fragile bonds of intimate family and marital relationships. This is where the moist grievous pain, damage and sorrow occur. There is repeatedly an interference with or even destruction of healthy love and sexual relationships.
Cline certainly qualifies as an expert on online pornography. The doctor encourages person struggling with masturbation or porn addiction to seek help. However, as an experienced therapist, the doctor realizes that it is rare the addict seeks help until after a period of self-destruction.
